Artificial Ferns
Another thing that particularly reminds me of those visits to my grandmother's house are artificial ferns. I think they were her favorite. They must have been. It was funny that she had them inside the house at all. She was in the middle of the woods and had the live ones growing all around her. So, to have more inside, she must have thought they were really something special. I'm not sure if I would hold them in quite so high esteem, myself. But I do see the beauty of them, and I have one or two around here somewhere.

I especially like hanging artificial ferns. I think it can make an otherwise dull corner look interesting. Maybe it's the way that the leaves drape downward, and the scruffy, wild look to them. I think that's probably what my grandmother saw in artificial ferns too, that feral quality. She loved the great outdoors for her entire life. When she and my grandfather moved into that house on the edge of town, there was hardly a town there at all. That's how my father remembers it. He talks about growing up in the woods and having nature all around him with the nearest other soul living miles and miles away. I think that the town and other people just found them. Kind of slowly crept up on the house over the years. My grandmother seemed pleased enough to have people closer to her, but I don't think that was the original plan.
Maybe all those artificial ferns reminded her of the rustic days of her youth, when she first got married and got that house in the forest. When her entire life was ahead of her. Maybe they'll do the same for me one of these days. Although my life isn't like hers. I live in the city, miles away from the wilderness. Artificial ferns are the only ones I see on a day to day basis. I miss country life sometimes. I haven't gotten out there in years. That house that I remember visiting every Sunday is gone now. My father sold it, even though I didn't want him to at the time. I wanted to hold onto all the memories. But it was too expensive for him to keep up with, so it had to go. I remember him trying to explain things to me, but I was too young to understand at the time. Sometimes you just have to grow up to get it.
Maybe they'll remind me of my own life in a way though. I would like to think that one thing I inherited from her is that strong spirit. So, maybe I don't have to be the quintessential country girl in order to take some of that with me anyway. Perhaps those artificial ferns can remind me of the girl with her spirit in the wilderness, who grew up in the suburbs, who moved to the big city, seeing it for the first time all on her own. That's kind of wild in its own way too.
